Street art — Yangon, Myanmar

Yangon Walls

Art changes people, and people change the world!

Yangon Walls is a social, environmental and philanthropic project that turns Yangon’s rubbish-filled back alleys into an open-air art gallery, making art more accessible and giving artists the chance to express themselves freely.

Before After Before After

Long concerned with environmental issues, de Lorme made her art a lever for rehabilitating run-down and abandoned parts of Yangon. Street art did not exist in Burma and no one had ever dared to paint on the walls. In 2018 she brought together a team of volunteers and young Burmese artists. Together they created the YangonWalls collective.

YangonWalls recruited a team of volunteers to clean the alleys; local residents stopped throwing rubbish out of their windows and committed to looking after the back lanes.

Volunteers help clean and maintain these streets and create the murals, highlighting the importance of no longer throwing rubbish out of windows.

Art is a tool that encourages beautification and carries social messages.

The Ygnwalls Studio

In 2019 the YGNWALLS collective opened the doors of its studio, giving local artists the chance to exhibit their work.
